Yeah, as you can see, we don't have UPS to Canada as an option in our online store, since it is an acquired taste. I should note though that several stores do use it, at their own insistence, since it is soooo much more reliable than USPS for large orders crossing the border.

Hopefully, UPS will not be the shipper of choice for orders to Canada. UPS will charge massive "brokerage" fees to give you a package. With USPS, it's a gamble, maybe customs will search it, charge you $5 + taxes for the items ordered. With UPS all orders go through customs, and as a result, UPS charges the taxes, and inflated customs charge and their own charges as well... Seriously, don't use UPS for Canadian orders.

That comment was 100% tongue-in-cheek, though there was no way to know that. Such are the pitfalls of the written word.

I still appreciate both your thoughtful responses, however. I did not know that USPS is unsubsidized!

what Ret said.

also, most people don't know it, but the USPS isn't subsidized in any way whatsoever by the US government, and more or less operates just as a private company would, except that they are subject to congressional oversight, so it's not really anymore of a public service than UPS.

I can't speak for the Far East cell, but I'd hazard the guess that were they to endorse anything, it would neither be state-controlled "public services" nor private enterprise, but mutual aid networks. In practical terms, that means if you know someone traveling through Oregon, better they bring you whatever you need without anyone having to pay anything or any poorly paid worker lugging around some package that is precious to you but meaningless to him or her.

So does this constitute crimethinc's endorsement of the privatization of public services?

Just giving you all a hard time...
