Two years ago we hosted the CrimethInc. Convergence in our town, Winona Minnesota. During that gathering, we attempted to organize Winona’s first Really Really Free Market. Foolishly, we had only promoted this ‘Free Market to the local liberal scene and circulated the news amongst our DIY community. That was a mistake—out of town participants outnumbered locals 20 to 1, our local liberal community didn’t come through, and all the items available at the ‘Free Market would only have appealed to DIY kids anyway. Though we considered that a defeat, we knew we’d try it again sometime.
Find out what happened this time.

This month, as every month, I tromped over to Borders to purchase the new issue of Elle magazine. I was delighted to see that the May 2008 Elle is their third Green Issue; thanks to funding from Aveeno®, it’s even printed on 10 percent post-consumer recycled paper. But when I opened the magazine, I discovered a sticker pasted across one of the articles, as pictured here.
The article in question details the recent case in which an FBI employee infiltrated a group of young radicals, pressured them to carry out illegal activity, and lured them to a bugged cabin, at which they were arrested when it appeared that they were not going to go through with her plan. Eric McDavid, one of the arrestees, was recently convicted by a conflicted jury and faces up to 20 years in prison.

Just a heads up that the USPS is raising postal rates across the board on May 12th, and the rates on this site will reflect that increase on May 11th. While the domestic increase is modest (but still an increase nonetheless), the international increase is more substantial–due, we suspect, to the extremely weak US dollar. Anyway, if you were planning on placing an order, the smart move would be to do so before the rate increase. Here are some samples of the change from old rate to new rate:
2 Pound Media Mail from $2.47 to $2.58
20 Pound Media Mail from $8.59 to $8.88
Flat-Rate Priority Mail Envelope $4.60 to $4.75
Flat-Rate Priority Mail Box $8.95 to $9.30
Flat-Rate Priority Mail International Envelope (Canada) from $8.55 to $9.45
Flat-Rate Priority Mail International Box (Canada) from $21.85 to $22.75
Flat-Rate Priority Mail International Env. (Not-Canada) from $10.45 to $11.35
Flat-Rate Priority Mail International Box (Not-Canada) from $35.15 to $37.00

We are delighted to debut a new category on our blog, From the Archives. Here, we will rescue valuable texts from the dustbin of history, putting them at the disposal of those best equipped to make use of them today.
Our first text in this series is the fabled Seattle Logistics Zine. Immediately after the Seattle WTO protests of 1999, many of the people who had coordinated essential aspects of the infrastructure of that mobilization collaborated on a zine exploring what they learned from their experiences. The zine covers organizing and security at the convergence spaces, volunteer coordination, the medic team, tactical communications, legal support, the squatting action described in N30: The Seattle WTO Protests, and the actual tactical and strategic planning that made the mobilization a success.
In the years since its publication, this zine has been widely sought but almost impossible to find. We expect it will provide helpful context not only to historians but also to those who are coordinating mobilizations this coming summer.

Just when we were on the verge of running out, a long-forgotten cache of Rolling Thunder #2 was discovered last month on the east coast and is now in our possession. We have about 150 copies left, which won’t last too long—so, if you wanted to get one before they are gone forever, now is the time. Also, as long as we have issues #2-#5 to sell, the Rolling Thunder Bundle is only $10.
