Continuing to push the limits, the fifth Rolling Thunder features 16 full-color pages and several competing feature-length stories. This issue was nearly a year in the making and definitely sets the bar higher for the magazine once again. We’re actually losing a small amount of money on these just to keep narratives from and analysis of current anarchist activity available in a durable, high quality format.
This issue focuses on different ways of conceptualizing strategy, exploring the ways anarchist efforts can be repressed, assimilated, and neutralized only to reappear in new forms. It opens with a study by David Graeber of the successes and stumbling blocks of direct action movements over the past thirty years, followed by a special report distilling lessons from the recent wave of federal repression known as the Green Scare. Two features give the inside story on anarchist mobilizations overseas via interviews, personal narratives, and 16 pages of full color photos: an examination of the riots following the eviction of Denmark’s beloved social center Ungdomshuset, and a full review of last summer’s G8 protests in Germany. The issue is rounded out by a subject’s analysis of the medical study industry as a case study in modern day precarious labor, a spotlight on anarchist organizing in Modesto, California, and reviews of controversial works by anti-art duo Brener and Schurz. 100% ad-free.

There will be CrimethInc. literature tables at the following upcoming events on the East Coast:
-National Conference on Organized Resistance, Washington, D.C. – March 7-9
-New York City Anarchist Bookfair – April 12
The NCOR table will be the debut appearance of the new fifth issue of Rolling Thunder. The tables at both events will also have copies of Expect Resistance and other books, as well as obscure records released long ago by CrimethInc. splinter groups and—above all—tremendous quantities of free literature.
In addition, rumor has it that a new band that includes members of older bands released by CrimethInc. will be playing shows at both events–on the nights of March 7 and April 12, respectively.

To our great pleasure and relief, the long-delayed fifth issue of Rolling Thunder will be arriving from the printer this coming week. In conjunction with this new issue, we present a new feature, a painstakingly researched analysis of the recent wave of federal repression against anarchists and environmentalists: “Green Scared? Preliminary Lessons of the Green Scare.”
The past three years have seen an unprecedented mobilization by the FBI against environmental activists, collectively known as the Green Scare, just as the severity of the ecological crisis brought about by industrial capitalism finally enters public consciousness. Who are the FBI targeting with this campaign? To what end, and with what results? What lessons can anarchists, environmentalists, and other freedom fighters derive from this phase of repression and resistance as it draws to a close?
An expanded version of this text appears in the new Rolling Thunder. We also direct readers to Briana Waters’ trial, at which a new chapter of the Green Scare is unfolding right now. Briana deserves all the support our community can muster.

When around a hundred hours a week are spent putting packages together for mailorder, it’s the little things that keep you going. One of those details are the small labels we’ve been putting on packages* for the past 8 years, which have gone through several dozen iterations. We just got back our latest batch, and our first series, that are by far the most elaborate and fantastic labels yet. We’re quite pleased with them and hope they deliver a small smile with each package—especially since we made 10,000 of them. As of this post they are already beginning to speed out through the shipping systems of the world to doorsteps everywhere.
Fancy photos of the series after the jump.

Here’s a story from a correspondent in Texas, who was canned for running material from Days of War, Nights of Love in a newspaper column—a humorous illustration of the hypocrisy and pettiness common in universities. Apparently, it is acceptable to argue in favor of plagiarism, but not to actually plagiarize anything; it is unacceptable to use text without citing sources, but it is perfectly standard to print outright falsehoods and censor the parties thus injured. We trust the erstwhile columnist, blessed with such absurd adversaries, is headed for finer things and brighter pastures.
His story after the jump.

After months of informal discussion, the general consensus seems to be that there should be a CrimethInc. convergence this summer, but no community has offered to host it. Perhaps the convergence is a victim of its own success, in that it seems like such a massive undertaking that no one feels ready to take it on; this summer is going to be an especially busy one for many anarchists, and time and energy will be stretched thin in some circles.
We’re eager to hear your input: Should there be a convergence this summer? If so, where, when, and how? Are you interested in helping make it happen?
